Program – A Tale of Two Books – This is the story of two books that are as different as night and day. One book is a work of fiction, the other provides self-help skills. One was honored as a literary masterpiece. The other has helped millions of people around the world. One author is famous, the other is relatively unknown. Dale Carnegie was born on a small Missouri farm in 1888. He was ashamed of his humble surroundings and tattered clothes. He discovered the importance of public speaking when he was in college. After years of hard work and study, he wrote How to Win Friends and Influence People which became an international bestseller. John Kennedy Toole was born in New Orleans in 1937. He had a burning desire to be a famous writer. He was certain his novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, was his ticket to fame and fortune. When the book wasn’t published, he grew depressed, and his life ended in suicide. Twelve years later, his book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
