The root beer float, also known as a “Black Cow”, originated in Cripple Creek, Colorado, in August 1893. Frank J. Wisner, the owner of the Cripple Creek Brewing Company, is credited with its invention. Wisner’s inspiration came from the snow-capped peaks of Cow Mountain, which reminded him of vanilla ice cream floating in soda.
